We chose to design a vehicle backup sensor for  three reasons:

  1. The combination lock was already taken.
  2. Alan doesn't know where the back of his car is.
  3. We like to do as much work as possible.

We wanted this sensor to perform three separate but related tasks.

  • When the driver is backing up into a parking spot, the sensor will warn of the distance from the vehicle/object behind and the speed it is approaching.
  • When the driver is sitting at an intersection, the sensor will warn of potential rear-ending situations.
  • When the car is parked and left alone, other drivers who come too close will be warned based on their distance and approaching speed.

These cases are further explained in the animated simulation

Polaroid Backup Sensor System
