PC/CP300: Electronics Laboratory II

Controlling Power Prelab

Power MOSFET

Compare the above power MOSFETs (IRF510 and IRF9510) on the following characteristics.

  1. Is this N-channel or P-channel?
  2. Does this operate in depletion mode or enhancement mode or both?
  3. What is the maximum continuous drain current? Under what conditions is this valid?
  4. What is the stated value for the "on" resistance? NOTE: This should be very small!

BJT

  1. Is this npn or pnp?
  2. What is the rated maximum continuous collector current? Under what conditions is this valid?
  3. What is the rated current gain?

Relay

You'll notice that the datasheet is a bit vague on the pin out for the relay component. The first step in the relay portion of the lab requires you to determine the functions of the various pins by measurement. Remember there should be two pins for the coil and pins for common, normally open, normally closed and any duplicates. For the prelab, I would like you to think about how you will do this.

  1. When the power is off, what should the resistance be between each pair of pins?  Focus on the ones that are not infinite.
  2. When the power is on, which ones will change and how will they change?

Optoisolator

Review the following data sheets and select the one you would prefer to work with for the lab.
